Program Environment and Classroom Management

This training focuses on the Program Environment and Safety section of the QSA tool. It is intended for afterschool staff members who have determined classroom and behavior management to be a need in their afterschool program. This workshop will deepen participants’ understanding of afterschool students’ behavior and how they, as the supervising adults, create a program that is positive and respectful. Participants will practice ways to guide and manage student behaviors and promote a program environment that is inclusive and with clearly defined expectations.

This workshop will focus on addressing this question by providing how-tos for taking Inquiry and Project-Based STEM Learning from theory to practice. The Art and Science of Older Youth Engagement

Believe the hype! The key for winning the hearts, minds and feet of upper grade-adolescent and high school youth is all about engagement! Not the ordinary classroom management and behavior modification training, this interactive and hands-on workshop will start by engaging participants in the process of developing a proactive and positive approach to creating structure and discipline that will achieve productivity and results without compromising strong adult-youth relationships. In this workshop we will experience the most effective program and activity design strategies, role play challenging youth communication techniques, and refine your arsenal of classroom management procedures.

Leadership for Student Success Through After School Programs (LSSASP)

Series of up to 4 trainings, 3.5 – 6 hours each (half day or full day, depending on staff)

This training is intended to ignite the conversation about afterschool programs with site administrators and afterschool staff. The main objective is to share the vision for how effective collaboration between the school day and afterschool programs can assist in school improvement efforts, including increased school achievement. This training is offered in 4 modules. Module 1: Create a Vision of Learning; Module 2: Ensure Quality Content; Module 3: Act as a Community Catalyst; and Module 4: Collaborate to Manage Resources. CVAF is a certified trainer for the LSSASP series which was produced by the Ventura County and Sacramento County Offices of Education.

Learn each of the research based sections of the CDE Quality Self-Assessment Tool and explore different ways to implement it to its maximum benefit. Implementation strategies include using the QSA as an assessment, a guide for professional development and tool to collaborate with other stakeholders.

The training focuses on vision planning, goal-setting and strategies to prioritize needs.

Alignment and Linkages to the School Day

This training focuses on Section 4 of the QSA tool and is meant to be presented to after school staff members who have determined that “Section 4: Alignment and Linkages to the School Day,” of the QSA is an area they want to collectively focus on based on their self-assessment. The training focuses on activities that cater to students’ different learning styles, on tools to help align academic learning to heavily tested content standards and on effective systems to stay in sync with the regular day.

Not Another Meeting!  Effective Tools In Meeting Facilitation

Learn a variety of ways to make meetings much more engaging and interactive for not just the facilitator but for the participants. Learn how to use tools such as agenda setting, groundings, meeting roles and responsibilities and participant structured engagement so that every member of the meeting is just as responsible for making the time together productive and successful.
