FEMALE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE SET FOR SEPT. 18‐19 AT McLANE HIGH SCHOOL
FRESNO, Calif.—McLane High School will welcome 100 high school females from the Fresno Unified School District, on Sept. 18-19, for a series of unique empowerment workshops designed to help teenage girls from all backgrounds develop a healthier future. The conference, themed “I Matter,” will offer sessions on: nutrition, physical fitness, appearance, and building relationships.
The event will begin on Fri. at 4 p.m. with a Friday Night Fiesta health fair hosted by Fresno Barrios Unidos at the McLane cafeteria. Sheriff Margaret Mims will be the keynote speaker at 7 p.m. Sheriff Mims will share her journey as a female role model in the community, how students can empower themselves, and how to reach the goals they set for their future.
Starting with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Sat., participants will enjoy six rotating workshop sessions and a luncheon fashion show. Workshop topics include: dress for success, personal makeovers, eating healthy, teen relationships, mini boot camp, and building self-esteem.
“This conference is all about empowering female youth to a better future by teaching them to embrace and love themselves,” said Cathye Estes, McLane’s after school program coordinator and conference director. “It is a way to show them that they matter, that they have beauty inside and out and that they can be successful in all areas along their journey in life.”
A variety of local organizations have contributed to the event including the city of Fresno Parks, After School, Recreation and Community Services “BEST” Program, Fresno Barrios Unidos, Mia Bella Couture, Mary Kay, Central Valley AfterSchool Foundation, Apropos for Flowers, Fresno Adventure Boot Camp, Casa Corona, Costco, Panda Cares Foundation, Victoria’s Secret, WOW Productions, Monday Matters, and A-Mark T-Shirts Inc.
The conference is being offered at no cost to participants through the McLane ASP after-school program. The goal of the after-school program is to teach students to advocate for themselves, explore opportunities to find a greater purpose, develop life skills and seek knowledge through education.
